We are Tadcaster Theatre Company. We are based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England.

The Society started life in 1948 as Tadcaster and District Amateur Operatic Society with the intention of performing G & S Operettas, which is why the Society had Operatic in it's name. As the times and members changed the Society moved on to more modern shows such as: "Crazy for You", "The Sound of Music" and "Oliver".

In the beginning the Society produced one show per year, but in 1981 they made the decision to put on two shows per year. One of these would be a book show, usually a well known one, and the other would be a variety show that would allow the members to show what they could do without the restrictions imposed by following a script or score.

The society was formed as a non-profit making organisation and donates some of the box office to charity.

Ever since the society was formed we have used the Riley Smith Hall in Tadcaster as the venue for all our shows. This building is the only remaining hall with a sprung floor for dances in Yorkshire and is one of a very small number in the UK. The Hall has a fairly large stage at one of it's ends and a balcony at the other. The seating is temporary and is usually removed when there is no show on to allow the hall to be used for other things such as weddings, dances and markets.

The Hall itself is a listed building and has registered charity status so that it can be maintained.

We rehearse most Tuesdays and Thursdays and, when we get closer to the show date, Sundays as well. This is not as bad as it seems as the rehearsal schedule means that not everyone will be needed for every rehearsal.

We are N.O.D.A. affiliated and in 1993 and 2003 we were invited to perform at the North East N.O.D.A conference that is held in Bridlington every year.

Every so often members of the society branch out to try new things and two of these have become subsidiary parts of the society. Tad Chorale has been formed in the last 5 years.

Tad Chorale was formed with some members of the local church choir and has specialised in performing choral work without all the trimmings of dance numbers and costumes. They have been very popular singing music at weddings and they perform occasional one night only concerts at the Riley-Smith Hall, which have been very successful.

We are always looking for new members for all areas of the society so if you feel that you have something to offer the society or think that you will get a kick out of being involved with amateur theatre in any way then please contact us or come to a rehearsal. We are always happy to see new people.
